A deeper look at the 0.199.0 APK Breakdown: XL Candies, Form Changing, and More!

Pokémon GO Datamine

Hello coaches! The teardown of the 0.199.0 APK pulled out some very interesting information and some hints of some pretty good features. Read all about it here. Niantic has started to intentionally hide things in code, so it sometimes takes PokéMiners a little longer to dig deep and find more information. In this article, we’ll go over the details that PokéMiners found in their latest, deeper investigation.

🚨⚠️ Disclaimer ⚠️🚨

Note that data miners have publicly reported everything in this article (PokéMiners). Information shared through these channels is not affiliated with or endorsed by Niantic and is always subject to change. Don’t take it for granted, functions change and are removed all the time. It is very important that you know that these things CAN AND WILL CHANGE.

Additionally, this article contains my thoughts and opinions regarding the code that was shared online; All of these should be treated as guesses, not hard statements. If you agree with that, feel free to read on. Possible spoilers ahead.

XL caramel

Seems like getting XL candy has been added when walking with your friend, this was found in the text a while ago. Seeing it actually added is a big step, and it will be a welcome addition to the list of ways Trainers can earn XL Candy for their Pokémon.

Transfer XL Candy has also been added twice, once as a generic reward and once as a specific Pokemon ID reward. It is speculated that they are looking to phase out the old way of handling candy making in favor of a new method.

There are also things that suggest that there will be a fixed reward for the XL candies that come. Possibly for Legendary or Field Research Pokémon of 7 days or more.

More about forms

It appears that there are multiple shapes in the code and when a Pokémon tries to shapeshift it pulls from that Pokémon’s shape list, so in theory any Pokémon with multiple shapes could shapeshift. I suspect there will be limitations to this.

When you change the form of a Pokémon, you will receive experience and sweets just like when you evolve a Pokémon. As mentioned in the APK breakdown, these shapeshifting will cost you candy and possibly stardust. You also can’t change a Pokémon’s shape while it’s in a gym, although there appears to be a lever on the server side for you to do so. Which seems strange.

When a Pokémon changes shape, it is actually replaced by a new Pokémon in your inventory, with all of its stats and information copied. This is the same process the game uses to turn Pokémon into Mega Pokémon, but not in regular evolutions. This could suggest that shapeshifting will be temporary, like mega evolutions.

PokéMiners were also able to confirm that the number of completed form changes is stored. This could lead to some things, including a badge, or form changes being part of a special investigation later, or being displayed somewhere.

I suspect there will at least be a plaque.

Kanto NPC

It has also been confirmed that Kanto NPCs will use the Team Go Rocket backend and will be considered a special invasion type. This could mean that we could see different versions of Team Go Rocket released in the future. Team Aqua / Magma, anyone?

There is an Incident Priority that can be assigned, which can theoretically be used to determine if the spawn is a Grunt, Leader, Giovanni, or Event NPC. There are also badges that can be associated with these invasion types, which might suggest that you will need a specific badge in order to see the specified priority. They said that you won’t need to buy the ticket to get the event NPCs for the Kanto event, so this is likely to be a placeholder for the future if they ever decide they need it.

Mini Collection Search Encounter Type

The Mini Collection Quest encounter reward has been added as an encounter type. This means that you should be able to see which Pokémon you caught as a reward for completing the Mini Collections.

Cross Play Friend Invitations

It seems, as I speculated in the APK teardown article, cross-game friend invites are simply a way of trying to get your friends who play Ingress and Harry Potter to come play Pokémon Go.
